did fox news try to pervert the course of justice, and just how scary is rudy giuliani?

The media-wing of the Republican Party, the 24-hour cable news broadcaster Fox News, is accused of attempting to convince an employee – Fox’s then commentator Judith Reagan – to lie to Federal Prosecutors.

The Feds were questioning Reagan over her previous affair with Bernard Kerik. Kerik is a close personal friend of Rudy Giuliani, and is accused of having mob links and accepting bribes from contractors chasing big city contracts – Kerik was Giuliani’s Police Commissioner while he was mayor of NYC. Kerik is also Giuliani’s business partner, a former personal driver and body-guard, and Rudy’s one-time recommendation to become President Bush’s homeland security Tzar.

It appears that Fox News are determined to protect the candidacy of Giuliani, who has proven frighteningly hawkish on foreign policy (neocon legend Norman Podhoretz is his advisor), and are prepared to use pressure to control the narrative. Reagan, a publisher famous for celebrity autobiographies, is suing the network.

In Michael Tomasky’s article, in today’s Guardian, he asks: “when did he know that the man he recommended to run America’s security was alleged to have mob ties?”

Maybe this paragraph, from a Time magazine article, will shed some light on Tomasky’s question: –

Then Giuliani gave Kerik the news: He would announce the next day that he was appointing Kerik deputy corrections commissioner. The promotion would make Kerik the No. 2 man at the agency overseeing the city’s prisons and lockups. Kerik balked, worried about his qualifications, but Giuliani insisted. “Just do this,” the mayor said. “Do what I’m telling you.” Relenting, Kerik agreed, but as he tells the story in his autobiography, what happened next was a little creepy. “In this dark sitting room, one by one, the mayor’s closest staff members came forward and kissed me. I know the mayor is as big a fan of The Godfather as I am and I wonder if he noticed how much becoming part of his team resembled becoming part of a Mafia family. I was being made. I was now a part of the Giuliani family, getting the endorsement of the other family members, the other capos.”

I know I may sound like a broken record on the subject of Giuliani, but the guy really creeps me out. Rudy Giuliani is just so ideologically moribund. I don’t think he actually believes in anything (beyond furthering his own career) or has any genuine principles, at all.

My money’s on Mike Gravel. He won’t win, of course, but he’s the most realistic and honest of the bunch.
