light posting, a wee bit ‘o politics, and other bits

23 Aug

I have been saying it all week, but I’m really busy at the moment. Not quite at the point where I need to put the blog into stasis, but not far off.

***

I did manage to catch the England game last night, and regardless of the miserable newspaper reports, I didn’t think it was a bad match. England played some good football at times, and Germany looked very poor (even if they did scrape two goals). Beckham didn’t seem right at all, however. And the English attack of Owen & Smith could hardly be called match-fit, could it? England also looked more comfortable with a more balanced central midfield – further proof, as if it were needed, that Gerard and Lampard should not be on the field together.

I’m scheduled to appear on Matthew Revell’s political radio show tomorrow evening between 7 & 8pm, so that should be fun. And I’m working all weekend, which will not be fun. I anticipate the blog will be very slow for the next few months.

The radio show is on WCR. If you’re in the Wolverhampton area you can listen on 101.8 FM. If not, but you have an internet connection, you can stream the show live from wcrfm.com. If that’s still not good enough, you can download the podcast, here.

Oh, and here’s a quote you might like, from ConHome’s Tim Montgomerie writing in the Guardian: –

Ryanair will undoubtedly be ready with a campaign against the Tories but higher taxation of transport is deemed necessary to pay for the cuts in inheritance tax that Tory strategists want to use to woo middle England.

Oooooops! I thought the whole point of taxing flyers was to plough the money into technology R&D and transport infrastructure? Not very progressive, is it Dave?

An interesting article here too. Is using Ad-blocking software equivalent to stealing content? Some (maybe only one?) sites have blocked Firefox (for which users can install an ad-blocking plug-in) completely. I actually think this is a reasonable point. If content is provided to the user free-of-charge, based on the user being subjected to advertising, then surely the content provider has every right to protect the interests of the advertiser? Okay, the site in question appears to belong to some rightwing nut-job, but that’s beside the point – if you read free newspapers online, you surely understand that they have to be financed?

Surfers are free to use ad-blocking software if they please, and vendors are free to block whoever the hell they please. Simple.

So I was off work and surfing and found this place and thought I would join up. I don’t have much more to say right now except I need to start reading some of the older posts to get up to speed before I can start posting. Em
